Fond Farewell

Hello all history fans and Whaley House followers, its intern Beth her coming at you live from the Whaley House. I hope that you all have had a lovely weekend and despite the heat and the fierce storm on Friday you all had a chance to come out and enjoy Back to the Bricks. I know here at the Whaley House we had a quilting bee going on Saturday. As you all may remember from my last post, here at the Whaley house, we are starting our Halloween adventure. I’ve been continuing to help Sam, the director, out with research for the upcoming Halloween exhibit; Monsters of Old.

We’ve also already begun construction on an awesome Halloween decoration for the exhibit and have been brainstorming other crafts to create for the exhibit. Our current project is a DIY (Do It Yourself) Scary Halloween tree and it is coming along great so far. I can honestly say that I am so excited to see the finished product of our project and then the exhibit. It will look AWESOME!! I was also able to listen to the Whaley House’s grant application being reviewed and that was another amazing and intriguing experience for me to be a part of.  Today I will be putting together all my Monsters of Old research for Sam and we’ll be taking down the Flint in Photos exhibit as well as preparing for a meeting later.

Well readers and fans I am sad to say that this will be my last post as today is the last day of my internship here at the lovely Whaley House. It’s been an amazing 4 months and I’ve loved every minute of it. I’m so glad that I was given this opportunity to get hands-on and in depth experience in my future career field. As well as meet some amazingly nice and talented people. I am now even more determined to obtain my dream job of working in a museum. This experience has been a lot of fun for me and I hope any future intern for the Whaley House feels the same way.

Well readers, it’s time that I bid you all a fond farewell and to remind you to check out all the awesome events coming up in October! It’s going to be super exciting!!!

It’s beginning to look a lot like…Halloween!

Good Morning all on this Friday morning!! It’s intern Beth here coming at you live from the Whaley House. I hope you all have had a lovely week and are ready for the weekend. This week I was able to attend a volunteer meeting and there I obtained a schedule for the events coming up in October. Furthermore, if I may say, the Whaley House has so many exciting events in October! And I encourage any and all to come and check them out! Of course there is History Happy Hour, the Flint Zombie Walk, Twilight tours, and a movie night! Plus the Whaley House will have the Monsters of Old exhibit to come and check out.

As I have finished with my project for the Whaley House I have been helping with research for the Monsters of Old exhibit by first researching vampires and am now on to ghosts. Actually just as I finish my project, the Whaley House receives a furniture donation of Eastlake Furniture. The donation includes a settee with four matching chairs, a table and a lamp. I just got to see the furniture today. Everything is in lovely condition and gorgeous! Research for the Monsters of Old exhibit is going quite well, I learned quite a lot about the history of vampires and my research on ghosts does not cease to interest me.

That is all for now readers, keep on reading and enjoy the weekend

It’s Alive!!

Goooooood Morning all Whaley fans and readers!! It’s intern Beth here coming at you live from the Whaley House. It’s a beautiful Friday morning and I hope you all have enjoyed your weekend. It’s been a while since my last post, but fear not readers I have not forgotten to update you with exciting tales from the Whaley house. Last week I had volunteered at the FireFly Walk at the Applewood Estate in Flint. It was so much fun!!! I was able to help out at the Lumber City Baseball Club’s batting cage. I helped Sam; the director pass out information about the Whaley house and its upcoming events in October. It was a lot of fun to talk to people about the Whaley house who have never been there or have passed it many times but never knew what it was. It was also a great joy to see how many people love the batting cage.

Well I am happy to say that I am almost finished with my project for the Whaley house. Today I just have to put on the finishing touches and look it over once more. Actually this morning I was just informed of a breakthrough investigation that might even help the content of my report. It seems that there has been a group of collections that had been completely missed when doing my initial investigation into which chairs had already been documented or cataloged. Therefore, in addition to adding the final touches to my project I will also be conducting another investigation. Hopefully, I will be able to find some awesome findings.

Until next time readers!!!! Keep on reading

Fun Fun Fun!!

Good morning and hello to all on this gorgeous Wednesday morning, it’s the one and only intern Beth here coming at you live from the Whaley House. Well I hope many of you have been able to come out and see our fantastic Flint in Photos exhibit. I know there was quite a buzz going on here on Saturday the 19th. If you haven’t been over to check out the exhibit, well then come on down! 🙂 Tomorrow another exciting event will be occurring; its the FireFly walk! It’s being held at Applewood and starts at 5 going until 8pm. It’s going to be tons of fun so be sure to stop on by.

I’m excited to say the my research report is coming together very nicely. I have almost finished and am ready to have it peer reviewed. I super excited that all my research is coming together into something that can benefit the Whaley House. I have been working on it like mad all this week and am so excited to see the product of my hard work. Today I will be returning to work like mad on my report to get the majority of it finished and ready for peer review and critiquing. Well loyal readers and Whaley fans I’m afraid that is all for today. I must adjourn to my report. Don’t forget to join in the fun events of the Whaley House!!

Tomorrow Tomorrow I love ya Tomorrow!!

A bright good morning to all Whaley fans and readers on this rainy Friday morning. Its the one and only intern Beth here coming at you live from the Whaley House. Everything here this week has been so busy, non-stop, in preparation for the Flint in Photos exhibit that starts tomorrow. Everyone has been making sure everything looks perfect and rearranging pictures and canvases to perfection. Jason’s work of art I must say will be an awesome first sight for tourists coming in and there will be plenty more canvases to look at and be intrigued over. We have so many pictures but of course we’d love some more so feel free to send them in. Old photos and recent photos of downtown Flint or yourself and others in Flint are welcome. The exhibit goes on until August 15th so there is plenty of time to send in photos or come on in and check it out, or both.

This week I’ve only had a little bit of time to work on my report for my project as I have been helping set up the Flint in Photos exhibit by cutting out pictures and gluing them and sweeping, dusting, and vacuuming to make the house all pretty for tourists. While cutting out pictures seems to be a repetitive and therefore boring job, I actually liked it a lot even when my hands got covered in spray-on glue and everything kept sticking to me. Now that the canvases are being set up; everything is coming together and the pictures look fantastic and give off a sense of pride to be had of Flint. Another fun event that is coming up is the FireFly Walk over at Applewood. I have never been to this event and am therefore very excited I get to go and am also interested to see what it’s all about. It starts at 5pm on July 23rd so don’t be late :).  And don’t forget to come check out the Flint in Photos exhibit tomorrow!! Everyone has worked really hard to create this masterpiece of an exhibit.

Until next time readers!!

Enjoy your weekend!

Beth

It’s all coming together!

Greetings fellow Whaley fans! It’s intern Beth here coming at you live from the Whaley House. I hope you all had a fantastic Fourth of July and lit up the sky with patriotism! Also be sure to keep checking out the awesome videos of Bobble head Robert Whaley and his shenanigans. Things are going great here at the Whaley House. Last Wednesday I had the privilege of attending a meeting and learning more about the inner workings of the Museum. Tuesday I attended the volunteer meeting and a couple of exciting events are coming up that are a must see! Be A Tourist starts July 18th and the Whaley House is going to have a lovely exhibit to show; called Flint in Photos, so be sure to come check it out! The exhibit is coming together so nicely, the pictures are looking great and the canvas Jason is painting to put the pictures on, looks fantastic!

Back to the Bricks is another upcoming event on August 15th so while you’re out roaming Flint looking at all the awesome cars don’t forget to stop in at the Whaley House for a dose of history too as Robert Whaley was the one who gave the starting loan to General Motors. There is also going to be some quilting going on here at the Whaley House during Back to the Bricks so be sure to come on by!! My project here is an improving work in progress. I am happy to say that I have begun my final report. I must say, even though I don’t consider myself an expert in writing papers, this report is coming together so well and I am having a lot of fun writing it. I have no clue how long it will be but it’s going to be a beautiful work of art when I am done :). Well readers I must return to the writing of my report. Don’t forget to check out the upcoming events here at the Whaley House; it’s going to be a blast! And be sure to keep checking out Bobble head Robert Whaley and all his adventures.

Until next time! Keep on reading!

Enjoy your Fourth of July!!

Hello again all! It’s intern Beth here coming at you live from the Whaley House. I hope you all had a fantastic weekend and are super excited for the fourth of July weekend. Another exciting week has almost gone by here and I am excited to say that I am done with the majority of my research for my project and am therefore ready to start putting it altogether. I am excited to see the outcome of all my hard work. Not that looking at tons of furniture and their history isn’t fun, but I’m excited to put all of my information down on paper for all to read who want to know.

The Flint in Photos exhibit is coming together so nicely; pictures are being printed and cut out and they are looking pretty snazzy and a canvas is being painted by Jason for the exhibit and it looks amazing so far. I guarantee that it will be a must see exhibit when it is completed. And even today I get to help with getting the pictures cut out and looking snazzy. I am very excited to see how this exhibit looks as a finished product. And of course I will also be working on writing out my project today :).

That is all for now Whaley House readers, I hope you all have a fantastic fourth of July weekend!

Until next time!

Knowledge is Power!

Hello again Whaley fans and history lovers!! It’s intern Beth here coming at you live once again on a lovely Friday morning from the Whaley House. I hope you all had a fantastic weekend and have enjoyed the sunshine. The multitude of events here at the Whaley House has begun. Saturday the 20th was the Quilting Bee and though I was working on my project, I was able to catch a few glances at all the fun that was going on. The Flint in Photos exhibit is coming together nicely, don’t forget to check it out beginning July 18th through August 22nd; it’s going to be amazing!! I hope you all have also been to see the Lumber City Baseball games and if you haven’t there are still plenty more games to attend!!

How is it going with my project you may ask? Well during the Quilting Bee on the 20th I stopped in to do some investigating and look for any makers marks on the furniture; unfortunately, due to re-upholstery and/or the environment in which it was made (most likely in a factory), I was unable to find any. (Special thanks to my mom for coming along to help). However, fear not loyal readers for my failed discovery has given me more ideas for researching my first batch of chairs and then moving on to the second batch. I am so excited to have all this information!

That is all for now readers!

Have a great weekend! Don’t forget to check out the Lumber City Baseball game this Saturday!

Until next time,

Beth

Adventures for the week of June 15th

Greetings once again fellow history lovers and Whaley House followers. This is Intern Beth here coming at you live via the Whaley House! I hope you all have been enjoying the blog posts so far as well as the videos of Bobble head Robert Whaley and his adventures around downtown Flint. Another amazing week at the Whaley House has come and gone all too soon yet was filled with fantastic activities. Monday I stopped by the Whaley House in the early afternoon to help out Sam and a couple other volunteers with weeding the flower beds around the House. While it was a bit muggy that day, we had the flower beds looking spiffy and weed-less in only an hour with everyone’s hard work. The flower beds looks 110% better if I may say so myself.

Wednesday was one of my absolute favorite days this week. As many of you probably know, and even if you don’t know; the Whaley House is putting together an exhibit called Flint in Photos. This exhibit is meant to show Flint, through photos, from the time it was founded until present day. On Wednesday, Jason and I went out and walked around downtown to local businesses and the local historical places to grab some pictures of the buildings and even some of the employees in front of their place of business. It was great, as I’ve never walked around downtown Flint before, so I learned a little bit about the businesses and even some history I never knew about Flint. After Jason and I did our photo-shoot of downtown Flint we met the Whaley House’s director, Sam, at the Buick Gallery to look through and scan a bunch of photos of Flint they had pulled for us.

Looking through those photos was my favorite part of the day, it was simply amazing to see how much life Flint had in previous years and the different activities the various organizations had planned. The Buick Gallery was awesome to see as well, as I’ve never been there before. After we collected a good amount of photos, Vehicle City Tacos was decided as the place for lunch, and may I say they have amazing food! Today I will be working on some labeling and shadowing a tour, plus helping clean and set up for the Quilting Bee tomorrow. I cannot wait to see the finished product of the Flint in Photos exhibit!

Until next time!!

Enjoy this beautiful Friday and Weekend!!

Beth

Happy Friday

A bright good morning to all on this rainy Friday morning. Personally I think that its mornings like these that show the intense beauty of the inside of the Whaley house as the majority of the source of light comes from the lovely lamps and they just give a vintage feel to everything. I hope you all have been checking out the hilarious videos of Mr. Robert Whaley and his shenanigans around Flint. Sam had just got done showing me the most recent ones that have been posted and they are hilarious if I may say so myself. I can’t not wait to see another video of what Mr. Whaley will be up to next time.

Well it’s been another awesome week here at the Whaley House. One thing I’ve noticed that I must give recognition to is that the flowers are looking amazing! Aside from continuing my research on my project, which is still going great, the activity that I’ve spent the most of my time on this week is continuing my cataloging adventure. I know from my second to last post I stated that I had completed my adventure, but Wednesday was the start of the sequel; Labeling. Since I had put all of the objects into the Past Perfect program, Jason wanted to show me how the start labeling them all. The process of labeling is a quite slow process as I had to apply a clear strip and wait for that to dry then apply a white strip on top and wait for that to dry then write the object ID and finally apply another clear protective coat on top. It was a lot of waiting and watching chemicals dry; however, the feeling of accomplishment after a batch of objects was completed was awesome! And even though it was slow, it was still a fun process to take part in and continue today.

That is all for now! Be sure to check out Robert Whaley’s shenanigans around Flint!

Have a great weekend all!!

Beth
