Exhibit: Class of 1895

A few years ago, Whaley House Museum received a number of photographs of the Flint High School Class of 1895. In honor of the graduation season, we’re exhibiting this collection for the first time. Below is an excerpt from the Wolverine Citizen describing the commencement ceremony:

Flint, Saturday, June 22, 1895

The Class of ’95.

The commencement exercises of the Flint High School were held at Music Hall on Wednesday evening and were witnessed by an audience that filled the house. The class was the largest in the history of the school, and was composed of forty-nine bright boys and girls. Prayer was offered by Rev. A. J. Bigelow, and an address of the class was made by Secretary of State Rev. Washington Gardner. Mr. Gardner’s reputation as a speaker led people to expect much of him, and no one was disappointed. He was followed by H. J. Jackson, President of the Board of Education, who gave an excellent practical talk that was full of common sense and useful hints to the class. He then presented diplomas to the following graduates:

Classical – Alfred Henderson Knight, Hugh Law.

Latin and Scientific – Blance Louise Bigelow.

Latin – Hattie Eunice Oviatt

Scientific – Elizabeth Emeline Babcock, Callie Wittenmyer Banghart, Leah Josephine Beach, Elizabeth Beucking, Lora Doane Church, Tyron Arthur Cornwall, Lena Maud Day, Raymond Newall Fisher, Luella May Hempsted, William George Law, Emma B. McShea, Emily Margaret Palmer, Jennie MacKay Payne, Norman C. Pontius, Edson R. Potter, Helen Margaret Phillips, Maud Mabe Soper, Herbert Henry Soule, Maud Elizabeth Vincent.

After the exercises at Music Hall, a reception was given the class at the Kearsley Street Armory. Prof. Milliken’s orchestra furnished music for both the exercises and the reception.
